Designing for Speed to Value

For Recess, I redesigned a traditional 15-screen “information first” onboarding flow to a streamlined 5-screen “value-first” experience. By flipping this funnel, we reduced our steady drop-off and increased early activation.

By asking “Who are you shopping for?” before prompting sign up, we’re establishing immediate utility.

I chose to reduce the information we collected to the bare minimum to support that speed-to-value.

I chose Lora, a sturdy serif, for its editorial credibility and trust. The copy reflects how design decisions were made, too — everything was measured against: Does this reduce the ‘scroll’ for parents, or add to it?

The onboarding flow ends with a personalized marketplace. This proves the personalization engine works instantly, fulfilling Recess’ brand promise and giving users a reason to come back and share more information over time.
